The Champion Of The Wave

About this Short Film

The Champion Of The Wave, directed by Ganimete Sava (Kosovo, 2026), follows a young person with Down syndrome as they train through long nights in Tirana, driven by rivalry and an ambition to become one of Albania’s leading champions. Using the subject’s own voice, the documentary offers a close, grounded perspective on daily practice, perseverance and relationships within a local sporting community, avoiding sensationalism while conveying the subject’s clear goals and competitive spirit. Its tone is empathetic and observational, likely to resonate with audiences interested in sport, disability and the lived experience of young adults seeking recognition and growth. A measured, respectful entry for Focus on Ability’s International Documentaries programme.

Film Transcript

I have started two things. At first I had the desire to move forward. I have trained at night for nine years, or maybe fifteen years, and I don't stop at night because I train there. In great hardship I want to do the maximum of the maximums because we are the strongest champions here in Tirana. For example, I have a rivalry with a champion — he has broken some record and I want to learn from him and make myself one of the greatest champions that Albania has today. And you will see me.
