I have an invisible disability which is autism and I have a lot of mental illnesses which you can't see. I got diagnosed with autism when I was nine. Every time I talk about my diagnosis to people they ask me, "You don't look disabled. You don't look sick." Like, "What does that mean? What does normal look like?" It does bother me because people ask you questions like it's an invisible disability. You can't see it. No, it doesn't mean I'm sick. I hate when people say that. I can do a lot of things that other people can do. I can walk, talk, I have hobbies. I can work like everybody else does.
My hobbies are diamond art and photography. I like to make cards out of my photography. I used to be a radio DJ, a radio disc jockey, on the far south coast for eight years before I moved to the Blue Mountains. I enjoyed it; they were like my family. I spend time with my friends and my family. I love spending time with my dog and I live in independent supported accommodation.
What is the message that you want to tell people? Accept people for who they are. It doesn't matter if they have disabilities or mental illnesses, if they're big or small. Be mindful of what you say. It can trigger somebody, so be careful what you say to them.
I see myself in the future having a good life, being independent, not relying on other people, just being who I am. It doesn't matter if I have a disability or not. I want people to accept me for who I am.
