How has cricket helped

About this Short Film

"How has cricket helped" (Ursula Frayne Catholic College, Australia, 2023) looks to the ways cricket can shape social life for young people with autism and cognitive processing or intellectual disabilities. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, the film explores themes of friendship, group participation and inclusion through the lens of sport. Rather than lecture, it offers a quiet, human view of how shared activity can build connection, confidence and routine. Short and honest, it sits comfortably alongside other festival works that celebrate the abilities and achievements of people with disability. Recommended for audiences interested in sport, inclusion and young adult perspectives.

Film Transcript

I'm 30 years old. I've been playing a lot of sports throughout my life. My top three sports are IFL, basketball, and cricket. My name is Pallas Batalia. I live in Selby Game Place, Wollaton, and my age is 32. My name's Kevin. I play cricket for Cardi Leakes, which I enjoy. Some of my mates from different sports I play, play for the club. I'm Robert Green. I've been playing for Cardi Leakes for four years now. It's really great. Yeah, I just love walking, gardening at home with the dogs, and yeah, I just love cooking and eating. Yeah. I live in Icknall, Wheelchurch, and I love to play cricket every summer. Yeah, and being part of a community like Cricket Club, I have had to communicate with my team-mates, know them for a long time. So, yeah. Sabrina helped me out when I first came here. It's a whole group community. Just to get involved in cricket. I love playing cricket with Woody and Ian as well. That helps form a team. And yeah, I just like playing cricket with the boys. Yeah, just having fun, mate. That's helped me just learning the skills for bowling, fielding, and a bit of social skills as well, but just helping people out. Yeah, just having fun on the match day. Yeah, Sean and my friend Kieran, that's how I got into the club. Oh yeah, because I play basketball with Kieran in Kalamanda, and he told me about the cricket, I mean, cricket. So, that's how I got into the club. I enjoy keeping fit, meeting all my mates at training, and playing games on the weekends. It's good. Yeah, like, you get to go with my team-mates. Like, go out and catch a game, or whatever. Yeah. Working out how to speak in Shakespeare. I do cafeteria work. Yeah, everything, yeah. Stephen. He helps me, he's listening, he teaches me how to catch a ball and improve a ball. What I enjoy most is watching my friends play cricket, and look after each other and stay on the task. It has to be Iendo Rosso. He was my first club cricket president since I joined the program, since 2016. Getting into the WA state cricket side, played four times, and I got into the senior cricket, plus a fourther for Caddy Lakes and a fifer, and I'm moving into the Premier League ICL side.
