FOA encourages storytellers from around the world to take part in a growing movement focused on inclusion and awareness. A key highlight of the festival is its ongoing partnership with SBS, which helps bring these powerful films to a wider audience. Over the years, the festival has become a strong force in challenging perceptions and breaking down barriers.
Many past entrants, from experienced filmmakers to those creating their first film, have shared emotional and thought-provoking stories that connect deeply with audiences across the globe.
The festival is continuing to grow, with a tour planned across Australia and New Zealand. It has also been invited to present at international disability conferences, helping to share its message on a broader stage.
Founded in 2009 by NOVA Employment CEO Martin Wren, the festival is built on a belief in the capabilities of people with disability. Martin saw film as a powerful way to shift attitudes and change how people see disability around the world.
Past films have informed and inspired audiences in more than 170 countries, with over 4 million views. Many viewers have said these stories have changed the way they think about disability.
The festival concludes with a red carpet awards event where filmmakers get to see their work on the big screen. Some films are also selected for broadcast on national television.
