Suzanne Dang’s Overcoming The Voices in My Head (Australia, 2023) is a short film that explores mental health and the experience of living with mental illness. It offers a reflective and honest portrayal of the inner voices many adults face, and the small acts of courage involved in navigating day to day life. The film sits quietly within the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival programme, which celebrates the abilities, experiences and achievements of people with disability. Thoughtful and respectful in tone, this short invites audiences to listen and respond, creating space for empathy and conversation about support, resilience and wellbeing.
When I'm unwell, I hear voices. The voices could be inside or outside my head. It could be a male voice, or female voice, or even a child's voice. They sometimes tell me I'm not worthy, that I'm not enough. They are always negative, and sometimes they tell me to do something bad and hurt myself. But I challenge these voices. When they tell me I'm not worthy, I challenge them with I'm worthy. When they tell me I'm not enough, I challenge them with I'm enough. I spent almost two years at a mental health rehabilitation place where I learned how to deal and overcome these voices. And I'm proud to say the least that I am stronger than the voices. Although I can't get rid of the voices forever, I can learn to manage it better. I believe there's a difference in hearing God and hearing voices. God will never instruct me to die. God is a good God, and he will want me to live and not die.
