My Documentary

About this Short Film

My Documentary (dir. Allan Stedman, Australia, 2023) offers a respectful, clear-eyed look at themes of acting and the everyday experiences of adults with cognitive processing and intellectual disability. The short film does not try to explain everything. Instead, it invites viewers to notice skill, presence and individuality, and to consider how performance and self-expression intersect with different ways of thinking. Presented as part of the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, it contributes to our program by highlighting talent, agency and the varied achievements of people with disability. Suitable for audiences who want a thoughtful, human glimpse rather than a neat narrative.

Film Transcript

Back in 2016, I played Chewbacca, Wookiee, in the BAMS. Last but not least, I played Gabrielle the Angel in a Christmas nativity play at the Coralbun Community Hall, KCA Hall in Coralbun, back in 2010. Also back in 2006, and when I was a student at Beaudesert State High School, I was in year 11 at that time of year. It was my favourite year because I took part in a school musical called I've Got Chew Under My Skin, and I played Frank Sinatra, and it was a good play, and I really enjoyed it. This was also a year 12, 2006 graduation evening, and it was held at Boys Town in Beaudesert, but sadly it closed back in 2007. I also played the advisor in the BAMS Theatre Zest production called Quest for the Stone, a short and sweet fairy tale.
