Harrison's Journey Into Music (Interchange Australia, Australia, 2023) explores the relationship between music and everyday life through themes of autism, cognitive processing disability, sensory disability, vision impairment and achievement. The short film considers how sound, routine and creativity shape one young adult's experience, offering a calm, attentive look that neither dramatizes nor simplifies. It sits naturally within the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, where films celebrate ability, resilience and artistic expression. Suitable for programmers and audiences interested in music and disability, this piece invites quiet reflection on individual strengths and the many ways people connect with sound.
I'm Michelle and I'm Harrison and we will be your hosts for this evening. I started learning when I was very little, say around four when I first had a go at experiencing the piano, but I formally started when I was seven years old. Music has been a part of my life. Well, folks said I used to sing before I could actually speak. Well, that's what my grandmother said, but she was right. Music, I was drawn to music in a way. I used to listen to music when I was growing up. I had some people in my family who used to play music. I was sort of encouraged to continue to play music. Eventually I listened to songs and figured maybe I could play that. Due to my size, my vision has been closed. I was unable to see the sheet music in print like everyone else. It was just too small. Okay, granted, I knew how to play the, I knew as I was growing up, I knew how the notes worked, like the crotchets, the quavers, the semiquavers, the midnotes and the semiquavers. But when it came to actually reading the music itself, that came to be very difficult. I couldn't concentrate, so I had to learn to read music, brown music, and that still took a long time to get to. It's kind of like, I like the enjoyment of being able to play for a large audience, being able to play the songs that they enjoy, and being able to show off what I, being able to express my musical talent with others who are able to play. I'm hoping to also continue playing in future bands. I'm going to be playing for a lot of audience, maybe at some point. I might think about continuing. To be honest, I don't know. Whatever's out there, I'm sure I could be able to pass with the perfect cadence to end the show. Well, that's everything folks. I'd like to say thank you to all those lovely bands who performed. Believe me, there were some greats out there. And all those other people who helped make this possible. Thank you.
