"My Cup of Tea" (See What Happens Productions, Australia, 2023)
This short film offers a thoughtful look at themes of achievement, difference and motivation within group settings. It examines how perception and viewpoint shape understanding of intellectual and physical disability, inviting viewers to reflect rather than judge. Tea features among the film's simple, everyday details, helping to ground the work in ordinary moments. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, My Cup of Tea sits alongside films that celebrate the abilities, experiences and accomplishments of people with disability. It is a quietly engaging piece that encourages conversation and a fresh perspective.
Everyone is different. In a world of countless paths, we stand as individuals, each with our own story to tell. You, me, him and her. For Marianne, a single minute feels like an endless wait, filled with anticipation. She knows that within this time, the tea will reach its peak. Offering a blend of perfect flavours and fragrances. Armed with a special cup and dedicated squeezer, capturing every drop. Louise fills her cup to the brim with milk, savouring a generous sip before gently moving in. Louise creates tea perfection. With a gentle touch, she graces James with the back rub. Then she settles herself, cup in hand, ready to relish the warmth and flavours of her tea. James begins his tea making ritual by warming the pot. And only using the finest tea leaves. As the tea brews, he dives into his newspaper, immersing himself in its stories. Once ready, he carefully strains the leaves using a tea strainer, ensuring an even and pure infusion. As he pours milk from the jug, he infuses his beverage with a hint of creaminess. James savours each sip, finding comfort in the ideal blend of flavours and tales within the newspaper's pages. Me, I don't want to make tea. I want to buy tea. Hey, can I get a cup of tea please? Thanks boss! Everyone is different. Who you are, where you're from, what you do, whether you have a disability or not. That is what makes you who you are and what I am. Just like making a cup of tea the way you like it. How do you make your cup of tea? you
