Clayton (Timothy Clough, Australia, 2023) presents a thoughtful look at young adulthood, ability and aspiration. Through its focus on sport, work and group life, the film invites viewers to consider the hopes, goals and achievements of people with intellectual disability. Timothy Clough’s short contributes to conversations about employment, teamwork and personal dreams without presuming a single story. Shown as part of the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, Clayton highlights the everyday acts of courage and commitment that shape people's lives. An accessible and respectful piece, it will resonate with audiences interested in honest portrayals of ability, ambition and community.
Ready, 1, 2, 3 action... Grrrrrrrrr... Grrrrrrrrr... Caw, caw, caw! Hello, my name is Clayton. This movie's all about me. I am 20 years old and I live with mum and two evil brothers. Some of my favourite activities are fishing, tennis, swimming, going for walks, learning new things. A bad day at fishing is better than a good day at work. Damon is my support worker. He teaches me lots of things and helps me reach my goals. Welcome to Minigolf. Gently. Clayton is just amazing. He warms my heart and he warms everyone's heart that needs him. How many shots did you get? Ten! When I first started working with Clayton, we helped get him ready for school and do a little bit of cooking and analogue times we worked on and tying his shoelaces. Clayton's school did such an amazing job with him. When he finished school, we wanted to keep up his reading and writing, so we started doing maths and working on capital cities. And Clayton has now memorised over 45 capital cities or more and knows more than anyone else I've met. Columbia. Bogota. Tunisia. Tunisia. Tunis. Canada. Canada. Ottawa. Fire Brigade. Time to evacuate. We also do practical things like fire safety and first aid. Damascus. Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Move the rope. Czech Republic. Prague. Well done. Very impressed. So Clayton really wants to go to Fiji on holiday, so I've been teaching him Fijian language. How do you say come here? Rakoma. How do you say go? Rako. How do you say sit down? Dambe. How do you say it's hot? Kete kete. Kete kete. How do you say it's hot? Kete kete. He's nice. He shouts me out lunch. He takes me mini golf, swimming, what else, fishing, tennis. Have you tried canoeing yet? No, we haven't yet. Can we, shall we go canoeing? We sure can. There's nothing we can't do. I like taking trips to the recycle centre to recycle empty bottles. And cash them in at the shops. And that's the last of it. I hope to work at containers for change because all I like doing is putting the bottles in the sheets. I know with the right support I'm able to achieve anything I want. Hello.
