A History of Video Games, from Giant Steps Tasmania (Australia, 2022), looks at the small moments where play, school and self meet. With themes of childhood, gaming and individuality, this short film offers a thoughtful snapshot of a young person's world and the ways technology can shape everyday life. It sits comfortably within the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, which celebrates the talents, experiences and achievements of people with disability. Expect a quiet, human portrayal that raises questions about belonging, routine and joy without spelling everything out. A gentle, honest piece that fits well among films about growth and ability.
Hi fellow humans, welcome to my documentary about video games. LET'S-A-GOOOOOO! Video games have been around since 1948. Chiro Champ was a version of chess developed by Alan Turing and David Champernone but they never completed and released it. Bertie the Brain was the first video game released to the public. In 1950 it was a tic-tac-toe game. In 1952 another tic-tac-toe game called OXO was released. It was developed on a computer called the E-D-S-A-C. There was a game called Space War 1962. I mean that's the year it was released, 1962. In 1979 Sierra Online or as they were known then, Online Systems was founded in California by Ken and Roberto Williams. Sierra invented the genre of graphical adventures games. For this adventure games were played with just text, there were no graphics or animation. In 1984 Sierra released King's Quest with IBM. The game was designed by Roberto Williams. There are 8 King's Quest games but we don't talk about King's Quest 8 or 7. But King's Quest 7 isn't the worst though. In 1987 the Lucasfilm Games, later to be called LucasArts, invented the point and click adventure games. Which was played with a mouse and it required typing with their game Maniac Mansion. Which was by Ron Gilbert, the creator of The Secret of Monkey Island. Sierra's first point and click adventure game was King's Quest 5 in 1990. LucasArts would go on to make popular games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Dave the Tentacle. Another popular Sierra series was Space Quest. In 1986 they released Space Quest Chapter 1 The Sarin Encounter. The game had to be re-released in 1987 due to legal copyright stuff with Toys R Us. RIP. So they changed the name Droids R Us to Droids B Us. It also had a remake in 1991. In 1991 Sierra released Space Quest 4 Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers. This game had a CD-ROM version in 1992 which was fully voiced and narrated by Gary Owens. Rest in peace. But video games weren't just played on computers but on dedicated consoles. A popular console in the early 80s was the Atari 2600. The Nintendo Entertainment System released in 1983. Popular games included Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda and Mount Troy. The Sega Master System released in 1985. It was followed by the Mega Drive also known as the Genesis in 1989. Popular Sega games include Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin and Gunstar Heroes. The PlayStation 1 was released in 1994. Popular games included Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon. The original Xbox came out in 2001. Popular games included Halo, Combat Evolved, Prince of Persia, The Sands of Time and The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind. In 1991 a game came out called Sid Meier's Civilization for MS-DOS. This turn based empire building strategy game spawned many sequels. Civilization had many countries and you would build a civilization. There was an amusing glitch in the game that would cause Guardi to take over the world with nuclear weapons which in our modern day is now a feature in Sid Meier's Civilization 6. The 1990s games with full motion video became popular. These games used live action footage of actors instead of traditional graphics but a lot of them had bad acting, poor story or were just silly. Altogether video games have been good to most people. Some weren't the best, some caused controversies or some never saw the light of day.
