Living & Learning, from Bendigo Special Developmental School (Australia, 2022), is a short film that explores inclusion and practical skill development within a school community. With a focus on film making and group work, it highlights everyday achievements and the social bonds that form when young people learn together. The film reflects the experiences of teenagers with disability, including those who use wheelchairs, and celebrates participation, teamwork and growing independence. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, Living & Learning offers a grounded, hopeful glimpse of school life and the skills that help students thrive.
Music Hello and welcome to BDO's special developmental school. Music For us at BDO SDS it began as a circus program and learning circus skills and getting the confidence to try something new and build on that, but now it's so much more. It's really a core part of our wellbeing development and it's also for our senior students who actually work in our leadership team. It's about all of the interpersonal skills to make that transition from being a kid at school to an adult in the community. Music Music The circus at the school for our kids in senior school I think it brings confidence, helps them find motor a lot, I have noticed that. Their resilience, if they can't do something they do keep trying. Music The kids love it actually and I love watching the kids learning the new skills and I'm absolutely blown away by the ability that these kids have to learn these new skills. Music I think it's great for the kids and they love participating in there as well. Physical skills, making friends, socialising. Music I think that it brings out their personality and they are able to do things that they probably didn't know they could do and it brings them together as a group. Music Hi everyone, I'm Ben. Hi, I'm Bec. And we are the Connected Circus and we work at Dendigo Special Development School. I love the circus programs at the special school and I love seeing the kids really engage. Music Some of the kids that we work with are non-verbal so it's a really nice way to connect with them too and engage with them on another level. I love the self-confidence that also comes when students find that they can do things they didn't think they could do before and then they see that they have the ability. It's a great leveller and the kids get to teach the teachers how to use the circus equipment. Music
