It is not the most interesting thing about it.<font color=#F3E7E4E050FF My name is Brian Oteno-Wanguma. I am visually impaired. I take that as part of my identity because I cannot separate myself from the fact of my being blind and it is the reason I encourage people to describe us as persons with disabilities. I lost my sight courtesy of meningitis. When I became blind it marked a turning point to my life and to the lives of members of my family, both nuclear and extended. My interest in law came when I was in primary school. I wanted to be the voice to the voiceless and my interaction with my dad led me to identifying that with law. So that is how I ended up choosing law. In this firm I am serving in the position of an associate advocate. My role includes drafting court documents. I also do research and advise clients. I appear in court to represent clients. The practice of litigation is labour intensive. For blind advocates those challenges are greatly influenced by the fact that we can't see. If you are to cross-examine a client or to examine a client you know the body language of that client is so important. It is very important to an advocate because you will know whether the client is lying or when the client is telling the truth or being uncomfortable. Those kind of reactions help you to frame your questioning. Going out there to be seen is part of the change. How do we make our profession an inclusive one where we bring on board everyone? We don't leave anybody behind. We do that by sharing knowledge because sometimes all we need is knowledge. What do we need to do? What are we not doing right? And when we do it right we are going to achieve our goal to make our profession inclusive. My family has been my biggest support system. I owe it to my family. It's really been supportive. They are the reason why I have had the confidence. To be the blind among the sighted. My social life is fantastic. I like being around people. I like also hikes although it's been a while since I last hiked. So to my fellow blind persons and especially those who desire to become lawyers and to practice as advocates, that journey is usually long. It has a lot of challenges. A lot of real challenges. But walk the journey. Follow your dream. Be positive. Don't be held back by anything, especially your condition, your impairment. I want to get to the highest level I can in terms of the practice of law either as a litigation practitioner or as a professor of law. So if I have an opportunity to do it, I want to do it so that I die empty. But with this firm I must say that I am a proud advocate and that pride has been made possible by the support I get from the firm, my colleagues and the society.
