Same Same DiFFerenT NormALL (2023) by Shirelle Burgess is a short film from Australia presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival. It explores ideas of normality, inclusion and how viewpoint shapes perception. Without presuming a plot, the film uses its imagery and voices to ask what counts as normal across different ages, from child and teenager to young adult and adult. It sits comfortably in a programme that celebrates the abilities, experiences and achievements of people with disability. Expect a thoughtful, human portrait that nudges viewers to reconsider assumptions about difference and belonging.
Good question, um, like, I guess it's because of how society wants us to see what's attractive of being normal and there is no normal. For me personally, I find it attractive when a person is, um, not normal, as in like, imperfect, because that's humans, like, if we're so perfect, we're basically God then and everyone will be boring. Yeah, why is it? That's a, that's a bloody good question. Yeah, I don't know, safety, I suppose, safety or something. Why is safety attractive? Why is normal attractive? Maybe it's like, um, there's safety in numbers or something. So if you can pretend to be part of the gang and pretend to be what everyone else, you know, pretend to be normal, then, then you're not an outsider and you won't get picked on for being different. Maybe that's how it works. I don't know. It's a funny state of affairs. Yeah, normal is, uh, well, it's normal for the spiders, case for the fly. You have people that are starving, yeah, people that are affected by war, yeah, people that are millionaires and people who are on islands. Normal is a perspective. Normal means being treated the same, equally, no bullying, no people getting told what to do, no nothing. I think normal to me is what everyone else considers normal, like what society does. What the majority of society would think is normal, what I think would be normal. I think. Yeah, because like, if you think or feel different to what everyone else thinks, then you're not classified as normal. So I guess society, what society, the mainstream does thinks and says is normal. Yep. Yeah. Well, to be honest, there's no such thing as normal, because everyone is unique and different in their own way, and that's what makes the world such a cool place. Otherwise, to think that normal would be pretty boring. Pretty fun. Enjoy my life. I watch YouTube like all the time. It's a joke. It means like being yourself around everyone and not being scared to express your emotions. Wah! If there was a new normal, I think it ought to be existent as paradoxical in that it exists such that there is no normality, and that it, or more to the point, normality is abnormal. Being accepted as who you are. Being accepted for being different. If you want to make it the new normal, first of all, you want to have acceptance in society like for everyone, whether it's race, gender, ethnicity, your disability, etc. You actually want everyone to feel welcomed. I mean, sure, everyone's going to be different, but we don't want to brainwash people to do what they want so they can be normal.
