Everyone Working Together (Warringa Park School, Australia, 2023) is a short film presented as part of the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival. Made by a school community, it explores themes of teamwork, learning and inclusion within a school setting and highlights young people, horses and the everyday experiences of those with cognitive processing and intellectual disabilities. The film offers a close look at group activities and the ways people support one another, without assuming a particular storyline. Festival audiences will find it a thoughtful contribution to conversations about ability, youth and community, and a welcome example of creativity from an Australian school filmmaker.
I've never actually had a horse in person before. We're learning what to feed them, how to put the head collars on, and all that. In one of my video games I had a pet horse and I named it Michael's and I loved it. We're learning how to work together. We went walking and we all had a turn and we helped each other with the horses. My parents signed me up for it because they thought it was best for me to come because my mother used to have a horse. When I come here it feels like I'm near more horses than I have been near my mums. Yeah like before when I was bringing the wheelbarrow, I was struggling and I got two people to help. And one of them's here and one of them's down there. Working together is like really important. Like you need to work as a team, not all by yourself. If you work all by yourself, you won't get it yourself, you won't get it there. I've been a coach for 30 years, so we have a multiple program here at the centre where we do ridden programs as well as our unmounted program. It builds confidence and resilience and they learn to be team players. RDA does lots as well as the ridden part and we're lucky here we have an equisizer that we can actually utilise to teach people to ride on that wouldn't normally be on a horse at all. It is really fun and it's nice to pat them and take care of them. This just calms everyone down, working with horses and working together. Working is more better than me just fighting with some people, so working is more better than fighting with people. Behavioural management is part of it, but also just to be able to lower their anxiety levels for a lot of our students. Learning to work together in harmony with the horses teaches them to work in harmony with other students, so generally the group that we will have that comes don't necessarily get together out on campus quite well, but when they come here their attitude is a lot different and they learn to work together. I think it's really good, it's amazing. Everyone is working together and everyone's just happy taking care of the horses. Ah yes, I would definitely like my very own horse, it would be amazing. What would you name it? Um, probably Michael. I would name it Michael.
