Wave Riderz - Urban Tides, made by Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus (Australia, 2023), uses music and Dreamtime motifs to open a conversation about perception and viewpoint. Set around a school community, the short brings together teenagers, including young people with intellectual and physical disabilities. It does not offer a single answer, but invites viewers to listen, watch and consider how identity, rhythm and place shape how we see one another. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, the film contributes a youthful, musical perspective to the festival’s celebration of abilities, experience and achievement.
Long ago, kangaroos were once divided into two groups, male and female. One day, a male kangaroo broke the law by attacking a female wallaby. As a result, he was banished forever. Chased by the wallabies, he reached Wollibimba, known as Newcastle, and sought refuge on Nobby's Island, where he remains hidden to this day. There's a city by the sea, where the sun shines down, there's a fog on the sky, Nobby's head, and great views all around. Rusty cones, white waves crashing down onto the sand. From the bogey hole to the city wall, we walk on all the land. That's Newcastle, a great place to live, it's the best city on earth. That's what we give. From Civic Park to Derby Street, where there's always something to do, and the vibes are straight wicked, it's all true. Down Derby Street, a vibrant place where art and culture separates. I see wires crammed in and blackboard torn, feeling the vibe getting warm. The murals on the walls, they tell a story of the city's history in all its glory. From shops and galleries to cafes to bars, concealed heart beats with creative arts. That's Newcastle, a great place to live, it's the best city on earth. That's what we give. From the ocean bars to the obelisks, there's always something to do, and the people are legends, it's all true. In the hot summer, we drive to Newey Beach, and the crowds are loud, but within our reach are the waves, and they are surf and dream. We swim and eat hot chips and ice cream. So come down to Newcastle, and soak up the sun. With the beach and the sea, this place can't be outdone. With the salty sea air and the milkshake so cold, Newcastle is a perfect place to never grow old. Yod, King, Average Park, where the vibes stay high. Sliding down makes you a vision for the sky. In the Tundra Stage, where dreams are told. Newcastle Gem, where stories are told. Shepherd's Teal Port, old and history tight. Whisper's Tales, of a Bible fight. In this country jungle, it's a natural escape. Key in Newey, where history takes shape. In Newcastle Harbour, where the vibes are alive. Cruising on the Stockton Ferry, we strive. Newcastle Harbour, the beat of our town. The working harbour, will never let us down. High as I can be our home, where dreams come alive. Newcastle Pride, forever we will ride. From the harbour to the streets, it's our hip-hop sway. Newcastle Pride, forever every day. From the dopest beaches, to the epic streets. Where street art leads, tales and rhymes meet. In this city's soul, where the runs are raw. Newcastle Harbour, now and forever more. Newcastle Pride, forever every day. Subs by www.zeoranger.co.uk
