About this Short Film
Naweza (Barnaba Asifiwe, Malawi, 2023) examines themes of perception and viewpoint around physical disability. Drawing on ideas of group dynamics, problem solving and the lived presence of a wheelchair, the film considers how young adults and their communities imagine solutions and adapt to barriers. Presented as part of the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, Naweza speaks to the festival’s aim of highlighting abilities, achievements and everyday experiences of people with disability. It invites viewers to rethink assumptions and to notice the small shifts in attitude and practice that help build more inclusive spaces. A thoughtful, respectful work from Malawi.
