Film Transcript

Mentally disabled children in Tanzania have limited possibilities to develop their capacities. Many of these children also suffer from epilepsy, and in the Tanzanian culture that is looked upon as punishment by God. Children with disabilities are sometimes kept out of sight or even abandoned. Albinism is a disability where there is a defect of melatonin produced, which results in little to no pigment in the skin, hair, and the eyes. This makes it difficult for people with albinism to see. Some are even considered legally blind. One particularly vulnerable group of children with disabilities that is receiving the attention of UNICEF Tanzania relates to those children with albinism. In some parts of the country, children with albinism are targets for killing and maiming by those who sell their body parts to those who practice witchcraft. Tanzania is estimated to have one of the largest population of children with albinism in the world, and a very, very sad fact is that many of these children do not experience their 30th birthday. This is due to the fact that many of them die from preventable diseases. And all in all, this is based on the fact that these children are denied access to services. There is huge stigma attached to children with albinism, and many of these children are simply seen as not being human. I am a teacher, and I am also a victim. I am not a victim. As a teacher, I am not a victim. I am a victim. It is very difficult for me to get a homework that I can do, or a classwork. UNICEF has helped me to get a scholarship to study in Africa, in Russia, and also to study at UNICEF. I love studying and receiving. I love life. If God wills it, I will become a teacher and teach the children of the world. Donating to organizations such as UNICEF and Under the Same Sun can help promote education and advocacy to those children who are less fortunate. For more information, visit www.unicef.org
