NDIS: Help or Hinder? from Grace Lutheran College - Rothwell Campus (Australia, 2023) looks at how the National Disability Insurance Scheme shapes views and everyday life for young people. Short and probing, it raises questions about inclusion, stigma and the different ways disability is seen at school. Themes of autism, cerebral palsy and congenital disability appear alongside discussions of mental health, prejudice and stereotypes. The film fits the Focus on Ability festival by highlighting voices and perspectives often overlooked, inviting the audience to reflect on policy, perception and practical support without offering easy answers. A thoughtful piece for anyone interested in disability and education.

I have Cerebral Palsy among other physical and mental health issues like ASD and PTSD. This is my story about being a participant on the NDIS in the NDIS or National Disability Insurance Scheme system for many years. This is a story about the mistreatment and blatant disrespect often experienced by those who are a part of the NDIS system. This is a documentary about my personal experiences as well as the experiences of one of my other good friends, Bridie. I have decided to meet up with her to discuss our own personal experiences with the NDIS system and the blatant disrespect that we feel as participants through the system to bring education and advocacy to this social issue. A few quick introductory questions to get you in comfortable in front of the camera. What is your full name? Yep, Bridie Jean Scott Parker. What is your profession? At the moment I'm a full-time mum to many baby birds. How would you describe yourself as a person? That's an excellent question. How would I describe myself as a person? Enthusiastic, positive, I can find the good in everything, happy and half-cut full. How is the application process? Oh, I love that. That's a fabulous question. The application process for the NDIS is a nightmare. There's not a lot of dignity when you're not well. People don't see you, people don't make eye contact. And I understand that there's budgets. I also understand that everyone's entitled to a happy life and the best life that they can have. I paid tax and worked darn hard for a long time. I still pay tax. So I do get a bit frustrated sometimes that there are people who are just left in the lurch. What is the thing that makes you happy? As long as you're not a serial killer, go for it. What is the thing that makes you happy? Whether you've got a disability or not, everyone can live their best life. Find out more about the NDIS at www.ndis.gov.au
