Robo Talk (Irene McCormack Catholic College, Australia, 2022) looks at themes of anxiety, mental health and how we perceive ourselves and others. Told from an individual viewpoint, the short film examines social interactions and the small moments that shape how people relate. It does not rely on spectacle, instead offering a thoughtful, human snapshot that will resonate with young audiences and anyone interested in the complexities of school life and social connection. Presented in the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, Robo Talk contributes to a wider conversation about ability, resilience and the everyday experiences that matter.
Uh, over here, I assume, right? Okay. Okay, I am here to shed light on social anxiety, and uh, yeah. Uh, do you want me to start from the top? I'm going to be using some weird visuals to explain my point, so get ready, 3, 2, 1. Within society, many things are built on social interactions, whether it's learning from a teacher, job applications, or even just asking a simple question. And for most people, these things just click together, but for me, my brain works a little different. You see, with social anxiety, most of these things don't just come naturally, or even if they do, it's really draining and can sometimes lead to panic attacks or other really severe cases. Uh, yes. Many things due to social anxiety become tougher. Here's another visual. You see, my brain is not the same, I guess. While yes, it physically looks the same, it's different. And this leads to life. Whenever I'm trying to complete problems, things just keep on stacking and stacking and stacking and stacking up. And due to my problem with asking questions, I can sometimes overwork myself. There are some actually. Though, this is only from my perspective, so please take that with a grain of salt. One misconception is that I'm allergic or something to all social interactions. This is false. It just means that most social interactions are way, way more draining. Just like you wouldn't want to keep a conversation with a stranger for 3 hours or so, I don't like talking to people. Good question. I deal with social anxiety by talking to psychiatrists, but I know other people, if it's really bad, must take medication. Uh, it's not all bad though, because the social interactions or people, my friends I guess, that are with me, say I'm a really caring person. And that's probably because I don't talk to many people. But eh, you know, every now and then I do get that click, and when it happens, it feels the best. That's all I want to talk about, so bye!
