The Great Reset (David Burkett, Australia, 2023) offers a thoughtful look at the aftermath of an accident and the choices that follow. Rather than a plot summary, the film explores perception, decision-making and mental health through the experience of an individual living with physical disability and using a wheelchair. Burkett's short asks viewers to consider viewpoint and how small moments shape identity. Its restrained tone and observational style make it a natural fit for the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, where it sits alongside works that highlight resilience, nuance and the everyday realities of people with disability. A quietly powerful addition to this year's programme.
Living through a season of struggle that doesn't seem like it's ever going to end. Walking through a trial that you have to endure and it causes you to wonder if you can take the next small step of faith. When this year started you thought it was going to be a great year of provision but the provision didn't come. When this year began you didn't think it would be a season of sickness and now all you're doing is praying for healing. When this year started you were filled with hope and enthusiasm but all you've known is torment and anguish. It has been a long year. It's a year where you've struggled in your business. It's a year where maybe you've struggled in your home or your marriage. It's a year in which the things that you thought you would never see happen not only did they happen but they keep happening over and over and over again. Don't quit. You cannot give up. When you enter into your long season you've got to give it all you've got. When people go into a season of struggle the first thing that they want to do is take a sabbatical. But whenever trouble comes the only way that you can get through trouble is work your way through it. Don't quit. And now ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've all been waiting for, please a warm round of applause for your keynote speaker, Mr. Progress McGregor. Thank you. Thank you. You know, at some point in our lives we will all experience massive disruption. Now I'm not talking about the kind of disruption that upsets your morning jog, that phone call from the boss. I'm talking about the kind of disruption that causes you to rethink everything, including meaning and purpose. This was the case for me only a few short years ago and I had a serious choice I needed to make. Were these events going to make me bitter or better? I had that six figure income, a beautiful wife and family, everything I thought would make me successful. This particular disruption caused me to rethink my life and it helped me to take stock and initiate a great reset. This is the same opportunity we all have to harness the power of the most disruptive moments in our lives for the betterment of our lives and beyond. And this, well this is my story. This is me, only a few short years ago. My health was shot, my friendships were spent and my wife and kids had become figments of my imagination. I was making money, lots of it, but I didn't feel the joy I thought success would bring. Nothing was enough and nothing seemed to satisfy me. This is also the day I experienced my wake up call. My great reset and my great disruption. On the day of my accident, the doctor told me that everything was going to be okay. It wasn't and for the longest time I hated him for saying that, for not saving my legs. But I realise something now that I didn't do back then, it actually is going to be okay. The accident slowed me right down to the point where I could see clearly what was truly important. Family, friends, my faith and in the midst of this so called disaster, I realised something, that everything truly was going to be okay. Some call me disabled, but I'm not, I am able and I'm enabled to make a difference. To be a hero to some amazing kids and wife and leave a legacy for many generations to come. I'm inviting everyone here to join me in doing so and doing the exact same and not letting any disruption rob you of your joy or zeal for life. Thank you. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2013
