About this Short Film
Njinga: Bipolar Stories (Choolwe Kayumbilwa, Zambia, 2024) is a short film that examines bipolar disorder through multiple viewpoints, touching on themes of stigma, stereotype, perception and the role of group support. Calm and direct in tone, it raises questions about how young adults navigate mental health, psychotherapy and social expectations, including in sporting settings. As part of the Focus on Ability International Short Film Festival, this work contributes to our programme by highlighting the abilities, experiences and resilience of people living with mental illness. It is a thoughtful invitation to reconsider assumptions and to listen to voices that are often misunderstood.
