I'm Tony Munter. I've been playing Power Soccer for about 10 years. I played here in Indianapolis, but I've also played in Arizona for Arizona State University. There's no eclipse him in Arizona.
Hi, my name's Tom Nikki. I'm the head coach of RHI Sudden Impact. I have been involved in Power Soccer for about 10 years and I've been coaching for about seven.
Power Soccer is a game much like able‑bodied soccer. It's played with only a few differences: it's played indoors on a basketball court and with athletes who are in power wheelchairs. It's four on four instead of 11 on 11. It's a very, very exciting, high‑powered, high‑energy game. As you can hear behind me, higher‑level teams play with chairs that are custom‑made for Power Soccer. They spin faster; they hit harder, so they react quicker, and it makes it a much more exciting game. During play the ball will sometimes sit up in the air and hit players.
I have about ten teams in the state of Indiana, which is more than an illustration in the country. Indiana is really the powerhouse nationally. All of the national championships—the rules have been standardised internationally and have come from Indiana except for one. Six out of seven national championships have been won by Indiana teams. Last year there were four different competitive cups in the country; three of the four were won by Indiana teams. So it really, really is a mecca of Power Soccer right here in Indiana.
When you start on your team they basically grow as your family. For the past ten years I've been playing Power Soccer; I just became a huge fan. A bunch of kids travel everywhere together and eat together. When we play we win together; we lose together. It's all part of one cohesive family setup. I really love the friendships that we've made throughout the world. I have friends in France, Portugal and Ireland now because of Power Soccer, and of course all over the United States.
It doesn't matter what age you are or what disability you have—you can play Power Soccer. It's fun to cheer them on and just watch how they grow and learn all the plays and just be part of an exciting sport. There's so much to be gained from the sport that I would encourage anybody to jump in, join a team and look forward to the future.
