I watched my students go from being relatively passive learners to very active learners. They grew as individuals; the dimensions of their personalities became evident within the project.
It felt really good being in a group of all leaders because you felt responsible, but then when you couldn't help the situation someone else was there to help you as well and it wasn't all one person you had to follow. We all got to have a chance to say what we wanted to do, because not many people with disabilities get the opportunity to be allowed to express what they want.
Students have brought a sense of resilience to the work and this incredible bravery to get up and try and do new things, so they really bring a sense of courage to the work.
It was a win-win for both groups because we loved coming. By the end of it we just wanted to be here. I think it was a win for them because they loved to be around us.
The collaboration with TAFE worked so well because our young adults got immersed in a real-life TAFE experience and the TAFE kids got a close-up look at disability and learned a lot of things about themselves along the way.
The highlight today was when Natalie wrote a letter saying, "I was her best friend. Me and Sherel were her best friends," and it just made me feel happy, like it actually meant something.
The performance on the night was great. When we were practising you could tell it was going to be good. I loved the performance; I loved that everyone was so into it and actually excited to go out there.
This project allowed students to grow in different ways and to develop skills in ways that a classroom will never allow.
What I learnt from leadership was that you have to take initiative, and if you see something that's happening then you have to step up and you have to work it out yourself. I'm more strong and confident in myself and I believe that I can do it regardless of what other people say. The diverse experience helped me learn how to be more confident, how to be a leader and how to talk to people a bit better.
Before this project I had no professional or personal experience of working with people with an intellectual or other disability and so I was petrified of what the outcome would be. I am now completely sold on the idea of collaborative projects and I am passionate and a great supporter.
