This is my little sister Jasmine. She was born with Down syndrome, autism and a hole in her heart. She died several times during multiple surgeries, but the doctors gave her a chest of steel and she pushed through.
Jasmine has trouble with day-to-day activities, even something as simple as tying her shoes. But no matter what challenges Jasmine faces, she always has me to help her out.
This story isn't just about Jasmine, though; it's also about my disability.
My name is Anthony and I have Asperger's. I struggle with it every day. Sometimes I don't show empathy and I can't communicate with people properly.
I don't tell anybody about my disability because I want people to see my abilities. The repercussions of not telling people and being afraid have cost me close relationships and careers.
Not all disabilities are visible, and no matter how much I struggle with my Asperger's, my sister is a reminder that I'm not alone and that I'm not ashamed. I'm proud of my sister and how far she has come.
Jasmine will continue to be my inspiration as I focus on starting a career as a filmmaker and one day making films as important to some people as this one is to me.
